~ HOENER ~

From Germany to Michigan

HOENER
This family line is special. It was the first family tree that I recorded as a child of 10 years old. My grandmother, Margaret Amelia HOENER, was given a copy of the family tree, done by her brother, Albert Lewis HOENER. The information was gathered by his cousin, Hilda OELGARTH, and her daugher, Helga ZUNDT/ZUENDT, on a 1950s trip to Germany.

I desperately wanted a copy, however, being just a child, I didn't "qualify", so I carefully copied the five pages by hand and saved them, for the next 45 years, recopying them several times, until the computer age arrived. During those 45 years, all of the original copies were lost or misplaced, which left my copy as the only one in existence. Then one day, in October 2001, while going through his father's old papers, Patrick HOENER discovered his father's original copy of the family tree and shared it with his sister, Mary Jo Hoener. Thanks to them, the Hoener Family History is no longer lost. Way to go, guys! After 45 years, I now have my own copy. Do you believe in miracles?

HOENER FAMILY HISTORY

ZUCCALMAGLIO
Our new 'honorary cousin' Wolfgang Aretz, of Cologne, Germany, is a living miracle! We can never repay our debt for his days of tireless work and generous efforts to 'reunite' us with our Hoener and Zuccalmaglio ancestors. He will remain a legend in our family forever!

Generation No. 3

3. Albert Eduard3 Hoener (Theodor Wilhelm2, Johann Christoph1) was June 4, 1851 in Beuel, Germany, and died Feb 07, 1913 in New York City, NY. Death Certificate He married (1) Katherine de Burgundee. She was born in Montgon, France. He married (2) Katharina WINSTEL, daughter of Johann Lugwig Winstel and Maria Margaretha Doerfler. She was born Mar 02, 1867 in Hayna, Germany, and died May 19, 1930 in Detroit, Wayne Co, MI. Obit

Albert Hoener was christened on Jun 04, 1851, in Vilich, Rheinland, Preussen. Nothing is known of his 1st marriage, to Katherine de Burgandee/Burgundee, or the circumstances of his two children, by this 1st wife, although he indicates in June, on the 1900 Federal Census from West Seneca, Erie Co, NY, that he immigrated to the U.S. in 1879 and that he had been in the U.S. for 21 years. In the 1910 census, he reports that it was 1880 when he immigrated. Albert had nine additional children, who were all born in Buffalo, New York.

In the 1893 Buffalo City Directory, Hoener, Albert, saloon and boarding, 1151 William [Street] is listed on page 629. In 1900, he gives his occupation as Hotel Keeper. In 1904, he was appointed and served as Postmaster of the Steel Plant district at West Seneca, NY. Hoener Hotel This remained his occupation in the 1905 State Census, although, in 1910, he is listed as a machine builder of gas generators. After his death in 1913, his wife, Katharina, moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she appears in the 1920 Federal Census, the Keeper of a Rooming House on Selden Avenue, with 33 lodgers.

In Germans to America, Barbara Hawkes Giezentaner found the record of our Katharina Winstel's passage to the United States, from an unknown Province, destination Buffalo, arriving Mar 8, 1888, on the Ship Elbe, from Bremen, Germany. She was listed as a "servant" and celebrated her 21st birthday just 6 days before her arrival in New York. It's probable that Katharina was coming to America, to act as Albert's housekeeper and possibly a nanny to Albert's children, "if" they were in the U.S. We have no date of birth or death for his first wife, Katherine de Burgandee/Burgundee, so can only guess where his children were in 1888.

Katharina Winstel, married Albert Hoener, soon after her arrival, as their first child was born in 1889. Just over a year after her arrival, her parents and siblings arrived in New York, on the ship Waesland, from Antwerp, on April 14, 1889.

Passage on the ship ELBE II
The "Elbe" was built by John Elder & Co, Glasgow in 1881 for North German Lloyd of Bremen. She was a 4,510 gross ton ship, length 416.5ft x beam 45ft, straight stem, two funnels, four masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 15 knots. There was accommodation for 120-1st, 130-2nd and 1,000-3rd class passengers. Launched on 2/4/1881, she sailed from Bremen on her maiden voyage to Southampton and New York on 26/6/1881. She was a record breaking ship at the time and sailed from Southampton to Sandy Hook in 8 days 12 hours 50 minutes, and in the Easterly direction in 8d 9h 10m. She sailed from Bremen on her final voyage on 29/1/1895, and the following day was sunk in collision with the British ship "Craithie" in the North Sea with the loss of 322 lives. [North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P. Bonsor, vol.2, p.551] - [Posted to The ShipsList by Ted Finch - 21 March 1998]

The steamship ELBE was built by John Elder & Co, Glasgow, for Norddeutscher Lloyd, and launched on 2 April 1881. 4,510 tons; 131,9 x 13,7 meters (length x breadth); straight bow, 2 funnels, 4 masts; iron construction, screw propulsion, double-expansion engines, service speed 16 knots; accommodation for 179 passengers in 1st class, 142 in 2nd class, and 796 in steerage. The ELBE was Norddeutscher Lloyd's first express steamer, and the first Norddeutscher Lloyd vessel with first class amidships instead of aft; uneconomic due to high coal consumption, and small amount of freight space. 26 June 1881, maiden voyage, Bremen-Southampton-New York. 1883, outfitted with electric lights. October 1889, first of three voyages to Australia. 29 January 1895, sailed from Bremen for New York; 30 January 1895, collided off the Dutch coast with the British coal collier CRAITHIE, and sank in 20 minutes, with the loss of 332 of the 352 on board [Edwin Drechsel, Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen, 1857-1970; History, Fleet, Ship Mails (Vancouver: Cordillera Pub. Co., c1994), vol. 1, p. 76, no. 50 (2 pictures); Noel Reginald Pixell Bonsor, North Atlantic Seaway; An Illustrated History of the Passenger Services Linking the Old World with the New (2nd ed.; Jersey, Channel Islands: Brookside Publications), vol. 2 (1978), p. 551]. - [Posted to the Emigration-Ships Mailing List by Michael Palmer - 5 July 1998]
