Flea market shopper loved grandchildren.
Elmer L. Sponenberg, 66, of Kachinka Hollow Road, Berwick,beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother,son and uncle, died at his home early Wednesday morning, June 4, 2008, following a brief illness. He was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Berwick, a son of Mary Slusser Sponenberg, a resident of Elmcroft,in Berwick, and the late William Lee Sponenberg.
As a young man, Elmer worked 20 years for Weis Markets as a stock clerk. He then went to work as a guard for the Graterford Prison in Hatfield, and more recently at the SCI Retreat, for 14 years, retiring in 2003, due to his health. He was Pappy Gummiebear to all of us. He loved to play with his grandchildren and his greatest joy was going to yard sales and flea markets filling his garage with treasures. He will never be forgotten. Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his wife, the former Ve Martin, originally of Lock Haven, and they would have observed their 33rd wedding anniversary on June 21,2008. He also is survived by two sons: James J. Milot and his wife, Doreen, of Brockton; Eric Sponenberg of Slocum; four daughters: Trudy Drasher and her husband, Charles, Dee Dee Whitenight and her husband, Robert, all of Berwick;Diane Pawlowski and her husband, Stanley, of Dorrance;Ronnie Hayman and her husband, Kevin, of Catawissa; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers: Dale A. Sponenberg and his wife, Patricia, and Richard E. Sponenberg and his wife, Judy, all of Berwick.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 7, 2008, at 11 a.m. from the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick, with the Rev. Elaine L. Boyer, hospice chaplain for Hospice By the Sea, Boca Raton , Fla., officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Front Street, Berwick. Friends will be received Friday, June 6, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
