C. HOWARD BOWER
Engineer at Berwick AC&F, retiring in 1960

C. Howard BOWER, 92, of 534 E. Eighth St., Berwick, a former engineer at AC&F Industries, died Saturday evening at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he had been a patient for one week. He had been a guest at Laporte United Methodist Home for 1 1/2 years. Born June 4, 1895, in Berwick, he was the son of the late Joseph and Cora BOWER. His wife, the former Helen G. SPONENBERG, died April 20, 1969; a daughter, Elaine K. ARMSTRONG, died Feb. 1, 1986, and a brother, Frank BOWER, died previously.

Mr. BOWER was an engineer at AC&F Industries in Berwick, retiring in 1960. He was a veteran of World War I. A lifelong resident of Berwick, he was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Berwick, and served on the church board. He was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years. He was also a member of Berwick Senior Citizens, a life member of Berwick Elks Lodge and past member of Odd Fellows Lodge. Mr. Bower was salutorian of the Berwick High School Class of 1913. While in high school, he won a state track championship at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Surviving are his son, Loren J. "Bud" BOWER of Montoursville, and two grandsons. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Kelchner-Hindman Funeral Home, 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick, with the Rev. Russell D. MENGEL, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Market Street, Berwick.

 
  

EUDORA S. BOWER
Lewisburg woman a former area resident

Eudora SPONENBERG BOWER, 93, Riverwoods, Lewisburg, died at 7:55 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 1997, at the Evangelical Community Hospital. Born in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Harry E. and Bertha ASHTON SPONENBERG. Her husband, Russell S. BOWER, to whom she was married for 57 years, died Oct. 28, 1980; a son, David BOWER, died in 1970; and a daughter, Janice B. ERICKSON, died in 1988. A sister, Ethel DIETTERICH; a brother, Lee SPONENBERG; one grandson and one great-granddaughter also died previously. She was a 1921 graduate of the Berwick High School and also a graduate of the former Bloomsburg Normal School. Prior to settling in Lewisburg in 1968, BOWER briefly taught in rural public schools in Luzerne County. She was a member of the Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church, Lewisburg. She was active in the O.E.S. Junieta Chapter No. 8, Clarks Green, the Lewisburg Garden Club and the Lewisburg United Methodist Home Auxiliary.

Surviving are a son, William R. BOWER, Northumberland; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donal SPONENBERG, Berwick. Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church, 40 S. Third St., Lewisburg, with her pastor, the Rev. John J. Dromazos, officiating. Burial will be in Mazeppa Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Gary H. Cronrath Funeral Home, 106 S. Second and St. Louis sts., Lewisburg.

Russell S. BOWER, 80, JPM Road, Lewisburg R.D. 2, died Tuesday afternoon at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, where he had been hospitalized since suffering a stroke Sept. 25. Born Sept. 3, 1900, in Berwick, he was a son of the late Boyd H. and Ida SITLER BOWER. He was married 57 years ago to the former Eudora SPONENBERG, who survives. Mr. BOWER resided in Lewisburg for the past 12 years, moving there from the Scranton area where he resided for 41 years. He retired in 1965, after 41 years service with Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. in the Scranton area. He last held the position of systems supervisor. Mr. BOWER was a member of Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church, Lewisburg, Waverly Lodge, F&AM, and the Williamsport Consistory. A son, David, died in 1970. Mr. BOWER was the last of five children.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Janice ERICKSON, Lewisburg R.D.; a son, William R., Lancaster; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. from Beaver Memorial Church. Burial will be Mazappa Cemetery, Mazeppa, under the direction of the Gary H. Conrath Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg.

Clark C. BROSIOUS, 82, of Nescopeck R.R.2, died at 9:15 p.m. Friday at Berwick Hospital Center. Born in Main Township, Nov. 2, 1910, he was a son of the late Victor and Sarah BEAGLE BROSIOUS. He graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1929 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In his early years, he farmed and later worked for Letterman's Bakery for 19 years. Mr. BROSIOUS was last employed by Wise Potato Chips, Berwick. He was a member of Hetlerville United Methodist Church, Nescopeck R.R.2. He was a member of the former Redmen Lodge, Berwick.

Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth VARNER, whom he married Dec. 26, 1936; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Lois) FARVER, Berwick R.R.3; a son, John BROSIOUS, Berwick; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Clayton (Effie "Peg") HARTER, Carlisle, and a brother, Ralph BROSIOUS, Shickshinny Lake. Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, with the Rev. Edward J. Preston, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mifflinville Cemetery.

 
  

RUTH BROSIOUS
Cared for more than 200 foster children

Ruth E. BROSIOUS, 85, a resident of the Bloomsburg Health Care Center for the past five years, died late Monday morning, Sept. 9, 1996, at the Berwick Hospital Center, where she had been admitted earlier in the day. Born April 1, 1911, in Briar Creek Township, she was the daughter of the late John and Lela SPONENBERG VARNER. She had been a longtime resident of Nescopeck R.R.2. Mrs. BROSIOUS had been the care giver for more than 200 foster children. Years ago, she attended the Hetlerville United Methodist Church. She was well known for her baking. Her husband, Clark C. BROSIOUS, died in June 1993. The following family members also died previously: twin great granddaughters, a sister, Sue VANHORN; and two brothers, Phil and William VARNER.

She is survived by a son, John E. BROSIOUS, Berwick; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Lois) FARVER, Berwick R.R.3; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two brothers: John and Carl VARNER, both of Berwick; and three sisters: Mrs. Evelyn MOSER, Volis, N.Y.; Mrs. Hal (Martha) CONNER, Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Ida EVES, Foundryville. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick; with Carvel May, lay minister of the Albright United Methodist Church, Nescopeck, officiating. Burial will be in Mifflinville Cemetery.

Bernard J. "Blard" BUFFONE, 72, of 1531 Brittain St., Berwick, died at 2 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, where he had been a patient for three years. Born March 14, 1925, in Balsorano, Italy, he was a son of the late Luigi and Filomeno Norce BUFFONE. BUFFONE came to the United States in 1929 and settled in Berwick. He attended the Berwick schools. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946. In his younger years, BUFFONE was employed by Berwick Weaving. He had also been employed by AC&F until 1962 and the Berwick Forge until its closing. BUFFONE was a member of the Maria Assunta Society; the American Legion; the Catholic War Veterans, Father Albanese Post; and the VFW; all of Berwick. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Dorothy KLINGER; two sons: Bernard J. BUFFONE Jr., Berwick; and David L. BUFFONE, Shickshinny; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a brother, Gaetano "Guy" BUFFONE, Berwick. A sister, Natalie ZAURZKI, died previously. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Joseph W. Nardi Funeral Home, 201 W. Second St., Berwick, with his pastor, the Rev. Dominick A. Mammarella, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.

The funeral of Mrs. Anna Mary Ash, who died last evening at the home of her son-in-law, Frank Nace, 1015 South Broad Street, after an illness of two weeks, will be held this afternoon at the Nace home at 5 o'clock. The body will be removed to Berwick, Pa., her former home for burial. Thatcher has charged of the arrangements. One son, Frank Sponenberg, of Berwick, Pa., and three daughters, Mrs. Samuel Oliver of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Mrs. H. O. Christian, of Berwick, and Mrs. Frank Nace, of this city survive. She was 59 years old.

DEATHS An illness of ten days caused the death at Trenton, New Jersey, of Mrs. Anna Mary Ash, until three years ago, a resident of Berwick. Death due to a complication of diseases occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Nace. Mrs. Ash was born at Briar Creek and was aged 58 years, 10 months and 10 days. She was first married to Charles Spoonenberger [sic], whose death occurred 22 years ago.

Edna C. Sponenberg, 81, died Wednesday afternoon at Char-Mund Nursing Home, Orangeville, where she had been a guest for three years.

She was born in Nanticoke, a daughter of the late Edward and Emma Simms Victor. She had spent her early life in Wapwallopen and most of her adult life in Berwick. Her husband, Frank, died in 1938. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Berwick, and the Women of the Moose, Berwick.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Ciscoe, Wapwallopen, and Olan Sponenberg, Akron, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. William (Lucretta) Weiss, Akron, Ohio and Mrs. John (Betty) Harter, Berwick; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, with the Rev. Donald L. Steinhauer, retired Lutheran pastor from Nescopeck, officiating. Burial will be made in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.

The death of Mrs. H. O. Christian, of Thirteenth and Chestnut streets, Berwick, occurred at 6:20 o'clock last evening, after an illness of two years, during which she was confined to her bed for two and a half months. She was aged fifty-seven years. General complications was the cause of death.

Mrs. Christian was born in Briar Creek and had been a resident of this vicinity her entire life. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Her husband, who served as president and a member of the Berwick council, survives as do the following daughters, Mrs. James Stout, of Danville; Mrs. Lloyd Farver, of Flint, Mich. Seven grandchildren survive as do the following brothers and sisters: Frank Sponenberg, of Berwick; Mrs. Samuel Oliver, of Bridgeport, Conn; and Mrs. Frank Nace, of Trenton, N.J.

Services will be held at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon at the Kelchner funeral home and will be in charge of Rev. F. L. Mammig, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church. Interment will be made in Pine Grove cemetery.

Dies At Age 69
Former President of Borough Council
Ill Several Years
(Died November 1946 or 47, Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania)

After having been in ill health for several years, Harry O. Christian, 69, former president of Berwick Council, died yesterday morning at 12:15 o'clock. He had been confined to bed for a week at his Chestnut street home.

Mr. Christian, a native of Berwick, had spent his entire life here. He had served two terms as a member of Borough Council and was president during his second term. The local man was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was formerly employed by the Wise Company and had operated a self service-station for many years but had been retired for some time due to ill health.

Surivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. James Stout, Baltimore, Md. and Mrs. Lloyd Farver, Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Yohey, Berwick, and Miss Kathryn Rittenhouse, Bloomsburg; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and eight stepchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Kelchner Funeral Home with the Rev. G. P. Cooley officiating. Friends may call Tuesday evening between 7 and 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in Pine Grove Cemetery, Market Street.

Ethel S. DIETTERICK, 84, formerly of Duval Street in Berwick, died early Friday morning, Oct. 1, 1993, at the Berwick Hospital Center, where she had been a patient two days. She had lived at Klingerman's Nursing Center in Orangeville for the past two and a half years. Born in Briar Creek Township on Oct. 14, 1908, she was a daughter of Harry and Bertha ASHTON SPONENBERG. She attended schools in Briar Creek and was later a supervisor in the cafeteria of the former Berwick Shirt Factory. For eight and a half years she was employed at the former McGregor Sportswear Plant. She was last employed as a aide for homebound people for 10 years. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church of Berwick and a former member of the Women of the Moose, Berwick. Her first husband, Howard VOUGHT, died in 1940. Her second husband, Wilbur DIETTERICK, died in 1953.

Surviving are three sons, Robert VOUGHT, Lightstreet; James VOUGHT, Berwick; Donald VOUGHT, West Chester; one daughter, June YOUNG, Mifflinville; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lee SPONENBERG and Donal SPONENBERG, both of Berwick; one sister, Eudora BOWER, Lewisburg. Six brothers, Phillip, Jack, Clyde, Boyd, Glenn and Roland SPONENBERG, and one sister, Jean HEIMBACH, died previously. Funeral will be Monday at noon from the Mayo Funeral Home, Second and Chestnut streets, Berwick, with the Rev. Daniel L. Dennis, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Berwick.

Alice R. ENGLISH, 90, of the Berwick Retirement Village, where she was a guest for five (crossed out and 7 handwritten in) years, died at 9 a.m. Monday at the Berwick Hospital, where she was admitted early in the day. She was previously a guest at the United Methodist Home in Lewisburg.

Born in Nescopeck, Nov. 14, 1894, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Adda SPONENBURG HETLER. She had lived in the Berwick and Nescopeck area most of her life. She graduated from the Nescopeck High School in 1912. Mrs. English was a retired employee of the former AC&F Industries in Berwick. She was the oldest member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Nescopeck. She had served as a Sunday school teacher, pianist, and with the Ladies Aid Society of the church.

She was preceded in death by husband, George B. ENGLISH, on July 18, 1964. She was the last member of her immediate family. Several cousins survive. Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, with the Rev. Edward PROWANT, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Market Street, Berwick.

 
  

MARGARET E. HAUGHT, 83, NORTHUMBERLAND

NORTHUMBERLAND - Margaret E. Haught, 83, of 221 Park Ave., died at 3 a.m. Sunday Community Hospital. She was born July 10, 1913, in Northumberland, a daughter of the late Norman Guy and Laura Grace (SPONENBURG) ROBERTS. Her husband, Everitt W. HAUGHT, died July 8, 1982, after 50 years of marriage. Mrs. HAUGHT was a 1931 graduate of Northumberland High School. A homemaker, she was formerly employed as a seamstress by the Danville Manufacturing Co., where she retired after many years. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Northumberland. Mrs. HAUGHT enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Surviving are four daughters, Betty ANDERSON of Houston, Texas, Twilia ARTHAUD of San Antonio, Texas, Shirley SIMMONS of Wallingford, Conn. and Jacqueline HAUGHT of Kingston, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, John F. ROBERTS of Watertown, Wisc.

She was preceded in death by one son, Everitt Jr.; two brothers, George and Harry ROBERTS; and one sister, Emma Jane ROBERTS.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church, Northumberland, by the Rev. Mathew M. VERGHESE. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland. Visitors may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, Second and King streets, Northumberland.

Mrs. Edward (Jean) HEIMBACH, 55, of Berwick R. D. 2, died Wednesday evening at 6:15 in the Berwick Hospital. She had been in ill health for an extended period of time. Born in Berwick, Nov. 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Bertha ASTON SPONENBERG. She was married To Edward W. HEIMBACH on Feb. 9, 1943. She held membership in the First United Presbyterian Church, Berwick.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are the following brothers and sisters;

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at one in the Robert N. Hindman Funeral Home, Berwick, with the Rev. Aaron Hastie, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Mrs. Sarah S. KLINGER, 69, Berwick R.D.2, died at the Berwick Hospital Sunday night at 7:31. She had been a patient since Jan. 24. She was born in Briar Creek Township, July 2, 1908, daughter of the late Edward and Minnie CURTIS SPONENBERG. She was married to William J. KLINGER, Oct. 1, 1926. The couple operated the Klinger Fruit Market on Orange Street in Berwick for a number of years. Mrs. KLINGER was a former member of the Summerhill United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include; the following children, Mrs. William (Ethel) ROUGH, Nescopeck; Mrs. Bernard (Dorothy) BUFFONE, Berwick; Mrs. Fred (Helen) CREASY, Berwick; William KLINGER, Jr., Orangeville; Richard KLINGER, Berwick; Mrs. Ralph (Gloria Dawn) ALLEN, Berwick; one sister, Mrs. Pauline NEIDIG, Berwick; three brothers; James SPONENBERG, Danville R.D.; Wilbur SPONENBERG, Bloomsburg R.D.; and David, Bloomsburg; 28 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. William J. "Bill" KLINGER Sr., 85, Berwick R.R.2, Briar Creek Township, died Sunday morning, March 26, 1995, at the Berwick Hospital Center, where he had been a patient for 11 day. Born Sept. 29, 1909, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Harvey J. and Edna May KNOUSE KLINGER. His first wife, the former Sarah KLINGER, died Jan. 29, 1978. His second wife, the former Mabel A. Richard, died Aug. 21, 1986. He was a member of the Evansville United Methodist Chruch, Berwick R.R.3. He owned and operated Klinger's Market on Orange Street and Park Road in Berwick for many years, retiring in 1974. In his younger years, Mr. KLINGER worked for the Berwick AC&F until 1960. He spent most of his life in the Berwick area. He attended school in Kingston, Edwardsville and the village of Central. He was an avid gardener.

Surviving are six children: Mrs. William (Ethel) ROUGH, Nescopeck; Mrs. Bernard (Dorothy) BUFFONE, Berwick; Mrs. Fred (Helen) CREASY, Berwick; Richard E. KLINGER, Berwick; William J. Cameron S. MYERS Sr., 88, of 315 Ball Top Road, Danville, died Sunday night Aug 31, 1997, at his home. Born Nov. 16, 1908, in Danville, he was the son of the late George and Hannah SHARE MYERS. He was the founder and former owner of the Myers Bus Co., Danville; starting the business in 1944 and retiring in 1996. He was a member of Grove Presbyterian Church. MYERS was a life member of the Danville Moose Lodge; a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge No. 224, and a member of Eagles and Elks lodges, both of Danville. He was also a Pennsylvania forest fire warden for a number of years. He was a member of the Friendship and East End fire companies, Danville. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. MYERS was a former Mahoning Township supervisor.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Hellen A. MYERS; four sons; Cameron MYERS Jr., H. David MYERS and Wayne L. MYERS, all of Danville; and Ralph E. MYERS, Middletown; three daughters: Mrs. John (Ruth Ellen) REEDER Jr., Mrs. Earl (Lois) PECKNE, Mrs. Franklin (Jean) SNYDER Jr., all of Danville; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. He was the last member of his immediate family. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the David J. Brady Funeral Home, Danville, with his pastor, the Rev. Robert J. Andrews, officiating. Mrs. Daisy May MYERS, aged 64, wife of Doil F. MYERS, died at her home, 539 News street, Spring City, near Pottstown, Saturday evening at 7 o'clock, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. MYERS was born in Berwick, the daughter of the late James and Sarah Emmett, but had resided in Spring City for the past 25 years. She was a member of the Royersford Church of the Nazarene.

She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Helen, wife of Cameron MYERS, of Danville, and Irene, wife of Paul BELL, Gloucester, N.J. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Clyde ROBINHOLT, of Berwick. Funeral services will be held in the Royersford Church of the Nazarene, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Vincent Mennonite Cemetery

Doil F. Myers, 82, of Danville, Dies

Doil F. MYERS, eighty-two, Danville R. D. 1, died at Geisinger Medical Center at noon yesterday. He had been admitted to the hospital the evening before. He was born in Nescopeck, July 9, 1886, son of the late William and Catherine SMITH MYERS. His wife, Daisy May, died in July of 1954. MYERS was a watchmaker by occupation and operated a watch repair shop on the Bald Top road and prior to that in Spring City for many years. He was a member of the Bloomsburg Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Cameron MYERS, Danville R. D. 1; and Mrs. Paul BILL, Wenonah, N.J.; a brother, George MYERS, Shamokin Dam; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Royersford Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Arthur Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Vincent Mennonite cemetery, Spring City.

Gertrude M. Robinholt Wright Neagley, 87, of 345 Iron St., Bloomsburg, formerly of Eighth Street, Berwick, died early Monday morning, Feb. 17, 2003, at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center, where she had resided since November. Born Oct. 9, 1915, in Berwick, where she spent most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Clyde W. and Pearl SPONENBERG ROBINHOLT. Educated in Berwick schools, Mrs. NEAGLEY had lived on Eighth Street, Berwick, for 32 years and moved to Iron Street, Bloomsburg, in November 1999, before entering the nursing home. A homemaker, she was employed by the former Bercon Packing Co., Berwick, for more than 15 years in the quality control department, retiring around 1980. Mrs. NEAGLEY was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Berwick, where she was active with its Martha Class. Her first husband, Robert J. WRIGHT, died Nov. 8, 1958, and her second husband, Millard M. NEAGLEY, died Oct. 15, 1964. A brother, James ROBINHOLT, also died previously.

She is survived by a son, Reginald A. WRIGHT, Bloomsburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill ROBINHOLT, Berwick; and a sister, Charlotte KNOUSE, Cambridge, Mass. Memorial services will be announced. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery, West Front Street, Berwick, under the direction of the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 119-121 E. Millard M. NEAGLEY, fifty eight, 809 East Second street, Berwick, died suddenly last night, at eleven twenty o'clock at his home. NEAGLEY was born in Sunbury and had lived in the Berwick area for a number of years. He had been employed with the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Knapp Lodge 462 F and AM. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.

Surviving are his wife the former Gertrude ROBINHOLT, and a step son, Reginald A. WRIGHT, of Ft. Lewis, Wash. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at ten thirty from the Kelchner Funeral Home, Berwick, with the Rev. A. W. LAWVER, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.

Pauline G. NEIDIG, 85, a former resident of 115 Linden Drive, Berwick, died Friday evening, May 9, 1997, in the Kramm Health Care Center, Watsontown. Born in Summer Hill, Dec. 11, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Winifred SPONENBERG. Her husband, Victor NEIDIG, died in 1975. She was a member of the Berwick Lutheran Church. NEIDIG was also a member of the Lady Rebeccah Lodge, Snydertown.

Surviving are a son, James E. NEIDIG, Selinsgrove; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers; Wilbur SPONENBERG, Buckhorn; and James SPONENBERG, Danville. A daughter, Betty Jane NEIDIG, died previously. Graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. Victor e. NEIDIG, 70, Hillside Avenue, Elysburg, died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday in the Sunbury Community Hospital shortly after he was admitted. Born in Irish Valley October 17, 1904, he was the son of the late Michael and Margaret LEWIS NEIDIG. In 1936 he married the former Pauline G. SPONENBERG, who survives. Mr. NEIDIG was formerly employed by Clark's Feed Mill, Paxinos, and last worked at the Shamrock Mills, Reed's Station, before his retirement in 1970. He was a member of the Elysburg United Methodist Church, the International Order of Odd Fellows, Snydertown, and the Encampment and Past Grand Association of the Odd Fellows. Additional survivors are two children, Miss Betty J. NEIDIG of Elysburg and James E. NEIDIG of Berwick; three grandchildren; and a brother, Jerry NEIDIG of Shamokin.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, Sunbury. The Rev. Raymond A. Wynn, pastor of the Elysburg United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.

 
  

ELIZABETH E. ROBERTS, 86, LEWISBURG

LEWISBURG - Elizabeth E. "Betty" ROBERTS, of RiverWoods, 1 River Drive, formerly of 1166 Wolverton St., Sunbury, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Evangelical Community Hospital. She was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Sunbury, a daughter of the late Roy and Cora (GETZ) FERRY. She was married to Harry P. ROBERTS, who preceded her in death in 1986.

She worked for many years for Dr. Robert WALBORN, and later Dr. Stephen IRWIN, both in Sunbury. Mrs. ROBERTS was formerly employed by Spruce Manufacturing, Sunbury.

She was an avid gardener and loved dogs. Mrs. ROBERTS was a life member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury.

Surviving are one son, Harry P. ROBERTS Jr. of RR2 Sunbury. She was preceded in death by one sister, Louise CONRAD, in 1998.

There will be no viewing, but visitors may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the David T. ZWEIER Funeral Home Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury. he funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Fifth and Market streets, Sunbury, by the Rev. Lars LANGHORST, her pastor.

N.G. ROBERTS FALLS DEAD AT PRR STATION

Norman G. ROBERTS, 172 Queen street, died very suddenly at 4:30 this morning at the Pennsylvania Railroad Station, Sunbury, from a heart attack while waiting for his train to go to work at Williamsport. Dr. John W. McDONNELL, the railroad relief doctor, was called and pronounced him dead. Mr. ROBERTS was an engineer for the railroad company on the Berwick local between Williamsport and Berwick, having been employed by the company for the past theiry six years. He had apparently been in normal health.

Mr. ROBERTS was born and reared at Unityville, Columbia county. He was aged fifty six years, eight months and twenty days. He was a member of the Northumberland Methodist Church, of the Number One Fire Company, and of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

His death serves a happy marital union of thirty six years. His wife was the former Laura Stonenburg.[sic] He had been a resident of the town for the past thirty two years and was held in high esteem in the community. He is survived by his wife, and five children as follows: George ROBERTS, Sunbury; Sergeant Harry ROBERTS, of Camp Ardmore, Oklahoma, who left Saturday after spending a short leave at home; Master Sergeant John R. ROBERTS at Camp Beale, California, Miss Jane R. ROBERTS, at home, and Mrs. Margaret HAUGH, of Turbotville, R.D. Following brothers and sisters also survive: Herman ROBERTS, Buffalo, New York; George ROBERTS, Painted Post, New York; Doyle ROBERTS, Kingston; Mrs. Bessie WENDELL, and Miss Edna ROBERTS, both of Shickshinny, and a sister, Jennie, who resides near Benton. Five grand-children also survive. Funeral arrangements will be announced.

Mrs. ROBINHOLT died at 6:22 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4, 1994, at the Berwick Hospital Center, where she had been a patient for five days. She had been a resident of the Berwick Retirement Village Nursing Home for one and a half years. Born Oct 12, 1895, in Briar Creek Township, she was the daughter of the late James and Sarah BOSTON SPONENBERG. Her husband, Clyde W. ROBINHOLT, died June 5, 1978. Mrs. ROBINHOLT was the oldest member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Berwick. She was a member of the Augsburg Sunday School Class and the Circle Esther of the church. She attended schools in Briar Creek Twonship, and had spent her entire life in the Berwick area.

Surviving are four children: Gertrude M. NEAGLEY, Berwick; James B. ROBINHOLT, Almedia; Mrs. C. L. (Charlotte) KANOUSE, Cambridge, Mass., and Bill D. ROBINHOLT, Berwick; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family. Proceeding her in death were three sisters: Minnie F. GEBHART, on April 22, 1941, Gertrude WHITMIRE on Dec. 13, 1946, and Daisy MYERS.

Clyde R. SPONENBERG, 69, of 6290 Old Berwick Road, Lime Ridge, formerly of Bloomsburg R.D.2, was found dead Thursday at his Haines City, Fla., winter residence. He was born Oct. 17, 1916, in Berwick, the son of the late Harry Elmer and Bertha Jane ASHTON SPONENBERG. He was most recently employed as a truck driver for Hanover Brands, retiring in 1978. Following retirement, he was employed by the K Cab Co. as a taxi driver for five years. Sponenberg attended Bloomsburg area schools and was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army paratroops with the 17th Airborne Division and 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Europe. He was a member of the Bloomsburg American Legion Post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Benton.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Dorothy LIVZIEY. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Sandra) STRUBINGER, Lime Ridge; Kathy SPONENBERG, Jermyn; a son, Barry SPONENBERG, Nescopeck; five grandchildren; two sisters, Eudora BOWER, Lewisburg, and Ethel DEITERICH, Berwick; two brothers, Lee and Donal SPONENBERG, both of Berwick. Born Feb. 23, 1919, he was a son of the late Edward H. and Minnie H. CURTIS SPONENBERG. Mr. SPONENBERG retired from Cotner Farms in 1981 after 10 years of service. He was formerly employed by the Danville Livestock Market for 13 years, as well as Clarks Egg Station and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He attended Frosty Valley schools. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Espy.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Margaret L. Donal S. 'Tucker' SPONENBERG, 78, of 1500 Fairview Ave., Berwick, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Berwick on Dec. 24, 1922, he was a son of the late Harry and Bertha (ASHTON) SPONENBERG. He attended Berwick schools. Employed by the former AC&F Industries, Berwick, and then the former Berwick Forge and Fabricating Co., he retired in 1977. SPONENBERG was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Berwick. He belonged to the Espy Fire Co. and the Berwick Veterans of Foreign Wars, and he was a life member of the West Berwick Hose Co. From 1975 to 1991, SPONENBERG operated concession stands at the Bloomsburg Fair.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Thelma E. MASKER, who died Oct. 21, 1992; seven brothers; Lee, Roland, Clyde, Phillip, Jack, Glenn and Boyd SPONENBERG; and three sisters, Eudora BOWER, Ethel DIETTERICK and Jean HEIMBACH. Surviving are a son, Roland SPONENBERG, Nescopeck; a daughter, Mrs. William (Donna) SCHELL, Berwick; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A retired farmer, Mr. SPONENBERG was last employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Kennedy VanSaun Corp., Danville. He was a member of Foundryville United Methodist Church, Berwick R.D.3. A son, Harvey SPONENBERG, preceded him in death in 1973.

She was born April 20, 1914, in St. Clair, a daughter of the late Matthew DUDISH and the late Mary (KEVOLOCK) DUDISH. She is survived by sons: Fred SPONENBERG, St. Clair; Edward SPONENBERG, Rio Rancho, N.M.; and Daniel SPONENBERG, Pottsville; daughters: Gretchen EICHENSEHR, McVeytown, and Damaris KOPE, Metuchen, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and siblings: Andrew DUDISH, Pottsville; Stephen DUDISH, and Justine RENNICK, both of St. Clair; and June HRABAR, Pittsburgh.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Fred SPONENBERG, and by sisters: Mary DUDISH, Anna DUDISH and Sue WILLIAMS. Mrs. SPONENBERG was a member of St. Michael's Church choir and UROBA Church Lodge.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Bruce T. Hart Funeral Home, 110 N. Second St. and at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Orthodox Church, St. Clair. Griffith C. SPONENBERG, fifty-nine, Catawissa R.D.1, died yesterday at the Berwick Hospital, where he had been a patient since Saturday. He was born in Briar Creek township, July 7, 1907, and was employed at a dairy farm in Catawissa. He was a member of the Summerhill Methodist Church and the Bloomsburg LOOM.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Carl BOWER, Berwick; two sons, Carl C. SPONENBERG, Danville R.D.1, Samuel SPONENBERG, Sommersville, N.J.; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Victor NEDIG, Paxinos; Mrs. William KLINGER, Berwick; four brothers, James and Edward Jr., Danville R.D.4; Wilbur, Bloomsburg R.D.1, and David, Bloomsburg. Funeral services will be Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Longenberger home for funerals, Berwick. The Rev. A. W. LAWVER, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Berwick, will officiate. Harvey E. SPONENBERG, 38, of Danville R.D.4, died Sunday morning at Geisinger Medical Center. Son of Edward and Martha CROSSLEY SPONENBERG, he was born Aug. 2, 1935, in Bloomsburg. He was a member of the Washingtonville Lutheran Church and was last employed by F. O. RINKER, Bloomsburg florist. He served with the Berwick National Guard from 1954 to 1958.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, the former Joanne FESSLER, and four children, Molly Lee, Dean Edward, Brian Eugene, and Charles Benjamin. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at ten from the Emerson C. Heffner Funeral Home, Washingtonville, with his pastor, the Rev. Glen Ludwig, officiating. Harold W. SPONENBERG, 60, of 662 Draketown Road, Orangeville, died unexpectedly Monday, March 5, 2001, at his home while preparing to go to work. He had lived at his Orange Township home since 1972, and previously had lived at Danville R.R.4. Born in Montour Township, Columbia County, he was a son of James L. SPONENBERG, Danville, and the late Martha M. MORGAN SPONENBERG, who died Nov. 21, 1994. A 1960 graduate of Bloomsburg High School, SPONENBERG was employed by NGC (National Gypsum) Industries, near Milton, for 23 years. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. SPONENBERG was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Grovania. He was also a member of the Valley of Bloomsburg Post No. 273, American Legion. He was a motorcycling enthusiast. A brother, R. Lee SPONENBERG, died March 22, 1998.

He is survived by his wife, the former Robyn A. ROBBINS, with whom he celebrated a 33rd wedding anniversary on Aug. 18; a son, Robbie R. SPONENBERG, at home; and a brother, Larry E. SPONENBERG, Danville. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dean W. Kriner Inc, Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Allen F. Helen Marie SPONENBERG, 73, of Cogan House Township, Trout Run RR 1, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at home after an illness. She and her husband Robert W. SPONENBERG Sr., would have observed their 55th wedding anniversary May 24. She had been employed by Carey McFall Corp., Montoursville. She was a member of Cogan House Christian Church. Born March 14, 1925, in this city, she was a daughter of Clarence Lafayette MARTZ and Ruth Helen BENNETT MARTZ.

Surviving, besides her husband, are three sons, Robert W. Jr. of Montoursville, Clarence of Trout Run and Allen L. of Jersey Shore; two daughters, Shirley HARRIS of Montoursville and Judy LORSONG of Columbia, Md.; a brother, Wilbur L. MARTZ of Trout Run; three sisters, Betty MARSHAL of Erie, Madeline CORDERMAN of DuBoistown and Ruth THOMPSON of Montoursville; 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Spitler's, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with Pastor William Waters, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy RR 2. Jack A. SPONENBERG, 67, of North Hollywood, California, and formerly of Briar Creek BOROUGH, died Dec. 18 after a lingering illness. He was a son of the late Harry E. and Bertha ASHTON SPONENBERG, whose homestead was in Briar Creek.

Survivors include his wife, the former Catherine WAGNER; two sisters, Mrs. Russell (Eudora) BOWER, Lewisburg; Mrs. Ethel DIETTERICK, Berwick; four brothers, Boyd, Lee and Donald, Berwick; Clyde, Bloomsburg R.D.2. James Sponenberg Expired Suddenly

James E. SPONENBERG, well known Berwick R. D. 2 farmer, died yesterday morning at 12:55 o'clock. A heart attack suffered while he was apparently recovering from pneumonia, caused the death. He had been in ill health since May 30 and confined to his bed since June 11. Mr. SPONENBERG reached his 75th birthday four days ago and would have, had he lived, reached his 49th wedding anniversary on September 5. The well known farmer was at one time employed for several years at the A. C. and F. plant as a molder. He had farmed in Briar Creek Township since 1900. He was a member of the P. O. S. of A. and of the Grace Lutheran church.

Surviving are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Doyle F. MYERS, of Spring City; Mrs. Adam A GEARHART, of East Lewisburg; Mrs. Clyde ROBINHOLT and Mrs. Lemuel WHITMIRE, both of Berwick. Ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Brothers and sisters surviving are: Mrs. Etta WIDGER, of Berwick; Mrs. John VARNER, of Berwick R. D. 1; Mrs. Mattie CASE, of Camden, N. James L. SPONENBERG, 87, of 140 Tower Drive, Danville, died at 2:08 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at the Bloomsburg Hospital, where he had been admitted Wednesday after being stricken at his home. Born July 15, 1914, in Berwick, he was a son of the late Edward H. and Minnie H. CURTIS SPONENBERG. A lifelong farmer, he had lived at his home in Montour Township, Columbia County, for 60 years, and at the time of his death, was still operating the farm. Sponenberg was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Grovania. A life member of the Montour Township Fire Co., he had served as a Montour Township supervisor for 20 years. His wife, the former Martha M. MORGAN, died Nov. 21, 1994. The following family members also died previously; two sons: Robert Lee SPONENBERG, on March 22, 1998; and Harold W. SPONENBERG, on March 5, 2001; five brothers: Griffith "Samuel" SPONENBERG, Edward "Pete" SPONENBERG, David SPONENBERG, Fred SPONENBERG and Wilbur SPONENBERG; and two sisters: Sarah KLINGER and Pauline NEIDIG. SPONENBERG was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He is survived by a son, Larry E. SPONENBERG, Danville, four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Dean W. Lee A. "Bill" SPONENBERG, 82, of 1624 Spring Garden Ave., Berwick, died Saturday morning, March 11, 1995, in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient for two weeks. Born April 17, 1912, in Briar Creek Township, he was the son of the late Harry E. and Bertha ASHTON SPONENBERG. He retired in 1975 from Berwick Force and Fabricating, where he was a crane operator. Mr. SPONENBERG previously worked for AC&F Industries in Berwick for 28 years, until the plant closed.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mary SLUSSER, with whom he celebrated a 53rd wedding anniversary in June; three sons; Elmer L. SPONENBERG; Hatfield; Richard E. and Dale A. SPONENBERG, both of Berwick; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donal SPONENBERG, Berwick; and one sister, Eudora BOWER, Lewisburg United Methodist Homes. He was preceded in death by six brothers: Jack, Phil, Boyd, Glenn, Roland and Clyde SPONENBERG; and two sisters: Jean HEIMBACH and Ethel DIETTERICK. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick, with the Rev. Erwin Roux, St. John's Lutheran Church, Mifflinville, officiating. Martha M. SPONENBERG, 78, of Danville R.R.3, died early Tuesday morning, May 16, 1995, at her home. She was in failing health for one year. Born in Grovania, she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Meta Paul CROSSLEY. She had lived in rural Danville since 1980 and formerly in the Columbia Hill and Frosty Valley areas. She graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1934. Mrs. SPONENBERG was employed in the cafeterias of the Danville Area School District for 19 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Columbia Hill. She attended the Senior Citizens Center, Washingtonville, and was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. Her husband, Edward H. SPONENBERG Jr., died April 14, 1976, and her only child, Harvey E. SPONENBERG, died Aug. 5, 1973. Also preceding her in death were four brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and a sister, Mary Catherine Tanner, Danville R.R.3. Funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Dean W. KRINER Inc. M. May SPONENBERG, 80, of 140 Tower Drive, Danville, died at 3:12 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 1994, at the Bloomsburg Hospital, where she had been a patient for three days. She was born in and spent her entire life in Montour Township, the daughter of the late Edwin and Elsie WALLER MORGAN. She graduated from the Bloomsburg High School in 1932. Mrs. SPONENBERG was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church Grovania. She assisted her husband, James L. SPONENBERG, in the operation of the family farm. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 20.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three sons, Robert Lee SPONENBERG, at home, Harold W. SPONENBERG, Orangeville R.R.2, and Larry SPONENBERG, Danville; four grandchildren; two brothers: Merlin W. and Clarence C. MORGAN, both residents of the Klingerman Nursing Center, Orangeville. Mary L. SPONENBERG 72, of Bloomsburg R.D.5, died at her home early Sunday morning. Born June 30, 1913, in Bloomsburg, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Myrtle GULLIVER HUNTINGTON. She and her husband farmed in Orange Township for more than 40 years. Mrs. SPONENBERG was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church and the Bloomsburg Senior Citizens. Her husband, Arthur K. SPONENBERG, died in March 1984. A brother, Clifford E., died in 1959. A second brother, William P. HUNTINGTON, died this year.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Delbert (Mary Jane) CRAGLE, Bloomsburg R.D.5; two sons, Larry L. SPONENBERG of York; and Kenneth W. SPONENBERG of Orangeville R.D.2; four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Donald (Helen) HUNSINGER, Esther HOAGLAND and Mrs. Robert (Edna) EROH, all of Mifflinville; and a brother, R. Born Nov. 4, 1936, in Montour Township, Columbia County, he lived in the same home all his life. He was a son of James L. SPONENBERG, with whom he lived, and the late Martha May MORGAN SPONENBERG. He was a 1959 graduate of Bloomsburg High School. SPONENBERG was employed as an equipment operator by the Lycoming Silica Sand Co. at its quarry in Montour Township for 33 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Grovania. He was a member of the Montour Township Fire Co.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are two brothers: Harold W. SPONENBERG, Orangeville R.R.2; and Larry E. SPONENBERG, Danville. Funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Dean W. Kriner Inc. The death of Sara Alverna SPONENBERG, eighty-three, East Fifteenth street, Berwick, occurred Saturday morning at twelve-ten. She had been a patient at Berwick Hospital for four weeks. Death was caused by complications. Her husband, James E. SPONENBERGER, passed away in 1937. She was born in Fairmount Township [Luzerne Co.] and had lived in this section all her life. She had been in ill health for the past year and confined to her bed for six weeks. She was an active member of the Patterson Grove Camp Ground, and spent her summers there where she had a cottage. She was one of the founders of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and an active member. She was a member of the P.O. of A. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Doyle MYERS, Spring City: Mrs. Clyde ROBINHOLT, Berwick.

Ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Ella ALBERTSON, and Mrs. Anna RICHARDS Berwick. Funeral services will be held from the Kelchner funeral home, Berwick, Monday afternoon at two o'clock with Rev. A. W. Lawver, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Berwick, officiating, assisted by Rev. H. R. Shipe, pastor of the Grace Lutheran Church, Berwick. Thelma E. SPONENBERG, 66, of 1500 Fairview Ave., Berwick, died at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday in the Berwick Hospital Center, where she had been patient 40 days. She was seriously ill for one year. Born in Berwick, Aug. 17, 1926, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Carl MASKER. She graduated from the Berwick High School with the Class of 1945. Mrs. SPONENBERG was formerly employed by Catawissa Shirt Factory, the Juda Manufacturing Company, Berwick, and last worked for Country Maid Sportswear, Berwick, retiring in 1991. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Berwick. She was a member of the Bloomsburg Fair Association and the Auxiliary of the Berwick Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mrs. SPONENBERG was a concessionaire for 22 years, following carnivals and fairs in the area.

Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Donal S. SPONENBERG; one son, Roland SPONENBERG, Nescopeck; daughter, Mrs. William (Donna) SCHELL, Berwick, and four grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by a brother, George MASKER, and two sisters: Helen MARKLE and Esther THOMAS. Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. from the Mayo Funeral Home, Second and Chestnut streets, Berwick, with the Rev. Jay BERGSTRESSER, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Berwick.

Betty Jane VARNER, 75, of 1501 Fairview Ave., Berwick, died at 7:38 p.m. Monday, June 29, 1998, at Penn State Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born April 1, 1923, in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Jennie BRITTAIN FEDDER. She graduated from the Berwick High School in 1941. For 19 years, Varner and her family operated a service station on the corner of Front and Poplar streets, Berwick. Afterwards, she was employed as a school crossing guard at the Orange Street School, Berwick. VARNER was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Berwick. She was also a member of the West Berwick Hose Co. Ladies Auxiliary. VARNER was an avid crocheter and craftswoman. The following family members died previously: three brothers, William, Mike and Claude FEDDER Jr.; three sisters, Mae HONS, Wava MAUSTELLER and Janet WENGERT; and a half brother, Sylvester O'LAUGHLIN.

She is survived by her husband, Carl E. VARNER Sr., to whom she would have been married 57 years on Aug. 8; two sons: Mike VARNER and Carl E. VARNER Jr., both of Mifflinville; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, with the Rev. Judith B. Boggs, pastor of Christ United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Catawissa, officiating. Carl E. VARNER Sr., 80, formerly of 1501 Fairview Ave., Berwick, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he had been a patient since Tuesday evening. Born Dec. 1, 1920, in Moore's Hill, he was a son of the late John and Lela SPONENBERG VARNER. He served with the Marines in Guam during World War II. VARNER worked 21 years at AC&F Industries, Berwick, until the plant closed in 1962, and later worked at Wise Potato Chip Co., Berwick. For 19 years, he and his family operated a service station on the corner of Front and Poplar streets, Berwick, until retiring. After retirement, VARNER was a school bus driver for the Berwick and Central school districts until age 75. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Berwick. VARNER was a life member of the West Berwick Hose Co., and Beaver Fire Hall. His wife, the former Betty Jane FEDDER, died June 29, 1998. Two brothers, Phillip and William VARNER, also died previously, as did four sisters; Ruth BROSIOUS, Sue VANHORN, Evelyn MOSER and Ida Mae DRUMHELLER EAVES [sic].

He is survived by two sons: Mike and Carl E. VARNER Jr., both of Mifflinville; six grandchildren; seven great grand; a brother, John VARNER, Berwick; and a sister, Martha COONER, Louisville, KY. Nellie VARNER, 76, formerly of Green Street, Berwick, died at 9:35 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 1993, in the Berwick Retirement Village Nursing Home, where she had resided since November 5, 1993. She had been ill for three years. Born in Berwick, April 15, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Eva ROPITSKY KRUPYAK. She attended Berwick schools and was a resident of Green street for 51 years. She attended the Berwick Assembly of God Church. Her husband, Philip J. VARNER, died April 15, 1987.

Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Marvin (Phyllis) KEEFER, and Mrs. Harold (Deborah) PETERS, both of Berwick; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one sister, Julia KRUPYAK, Berwick. Born Dec. 9, 1916, in Dallas, he was a son of the late Edward and Sarah (Curtis) SPONENBERG. He was educated at Bloomsburg High School. SPONENBERG was the owner and operator of the Buckhorn Garage for 47 years, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. SPONENBERG was a life member of the Buckhorn Fire Co. The following family members died previously: a son, Wilbur C. SPONENBERG Jr.; four brothers: Fred, Edward "Pete", Griffith "Sam" and David; and two sisters: Sarah KLINGER and Pauline NEIDIG.

He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Mae FAUSEY, with whom he would have celebrated a 63rd wedding anniversary today; five daughters: Mary Lou MUSSELMAN and Shirley COLLINS, both of Buckhorn; Janet HESS, Nescopeck; Sandra SPONENBERG, Bloomsburg; and Rose Marie ACKERMAN, Lime Ridge; a son, Robert SPONENBERG, Bloomsburg; 22 grand-children, 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Sponenberg, Danville. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Allen Funeral Home, Market and Eight streets, Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Allen F. Acor officiating. Wilbur C. SPONENBERG Jr., 55, of Mainville, Bloomsburg R.R.3, died Friday morning, Oct. 15, 1993, at Bloomsburg Hospital after a sudden illness. Born in Buckhorn, July 31, 1938, he was a son of Wilbur Sr. and Helen FAUSEY SPONENBERG, Buckhorn. Mr. SPONENBERG resided in Mainville for 30 years. Prior to that, he lived in Bloomsburg. A mechanic, he owned and operated his own garage in Mainville for 24 years. He had also owned and operated his own school bus for the past 17 years. Mr. SPONENBERG was a member of the Bloomsburg Moose and Catawissa VFW.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 33 years, the former Margaret GRUSASKIE; four children: Tony, Bloomsburg R.R.8; Frederick, Mainville; Mrs. Warren (Trish) CAMPBELL, Mainville, and Brenda BELLUM, Bloomsburg; seven grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Bernard (Mary Lou) MUSSELMAN, Buckhorn; Mrs. Leroy (Janet) HESS, Mifflinville; Mrs. Jerry (Shirley) COLLINS, Buckhorn; Sandra SPONENBERG and Robert SPONENBERG, both of Bloomsburg, and Mrs. Kenneth (Rose) ACKERMAN, Catawissa. William D. "Skeet" VARNER, 70, of Berwick R.D.4, died Tuesday at 5:40 a.m. in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre. He had been a patient for three weeks and was ill for five years. Born in Evansville on June 21, 1915, he was a son of the late John S. and Lela Mae SPONENBERG VARNER. He had worked as a paint sprayer for AC&F Industries for 22 years, until the plant closed in 1962. He then was employed by Yeager Wire of Berwick for 14 years, retiring in 1977. Mr. VARNER was a gardener and sold farm produce. He was a member of the Ebenezer Faith Bible Church, and he served in Army during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Kathryn BRIGGUM, with whom he would have celebrated a 45th wedding anniversary in August; four sons, William D. VARNER Jr., Allentown; David C. VARNER, New Tripoli; James D. VARNER, Wescosville; Robert J. VARNER, hometown; two daughters, Mrs. Jan (Mary Sue) LECHLEITNER, Palmyra; Mrs. Gary (Elaine Marie) BANKES, Etters; and 21 grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Phillip J. VARNER, Berwick; Ruth BROSIOUS, Nescopeck R.D.2; Ida M. EAVES, Foundryville; Carl C. VARNER, Berwick; Martha COONER, Louisville, Ky.; John VARNER, Berwick; Evelyn MOSER, Valois, N.Y. A sister, Sue VANHORN, died in 1964. Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Mayo Funeral Home, Berwick, with the Rev. Gerald L. WIGGIN Jr., his pastor, officiating. James W. Garney Dead
James W. Garney, one of Scranton's most prominent business men, died at his home in that city yesterday morning after a short illness of pneumonia. Mr. Garney, was born at Wyoming, and when a young man went to Brooklyn where he remained until he was about thirty years of age when he returned to Scranton and has since resided there. For many years he has been engaged in the manufacture of tobacco the enterprise being the largest of its kind in this part of the state. He was one of the organizers of the Dime Bank in that city and was also a director in other banks in Scranton.

Mr. Garney's first wife was Miss Alice Wogiom of State Island, who died in 1900. One child of that marriage, Mrs. Aaron V. Bower, of Scranton, survives. His second wife was Mrs. Elizabeth Loomis, of Meshoppen, who survives. Funeral Saturday at 2:30. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Sponenberg Killed, and Her Husband Badly Injured.
Hazleton, Oct. 31-While Albert Sponenberg and his wife and child were driving across the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks this morning they were struck by a freight engine.

Mrs. Sponenberg was instantly killed, the husband badly injured, but the child escaped. The horse was killed and the wagon demolished.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ira Long and two brothers, Gardner and John Mutchier, alt of this town. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock from her late home on Vine street, with services at the house. Rev. J. Albert Hall, of the Christian Church will officiate. YOUNG GIRL DEAD FOLLOWING OPERATION
Miss Mildred Erwine, a daughter of Freas Erwine, the popular merchant of 455 West Shawnee avenue, died yesterday afternoon at 3:30 at the Wilkes-Barre City Hospital following an operation for appendicitis. The young girl was teken sudeeenly ill with appendicitis on Monday afternoon and was removed at once to the hospital where she submitted to an operation that evening. It was a [illegible] case and her condition was critical until the end which came at the time mentioned. Deceased was a bright young girl and Mr. and Mrs. Erwine have the sympathy of the community in their sad hour of bereavement. She was a member of the Sunday school of the Christian Church and was loved by her many young friends. Her parents and one sister, Maxine, survive.

The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with services at the home at 455 West Shawnee avenue. Rev. J. Albert Hall of the Christian Church will have charge of the services. Interment will be made in the Edge Hill cemetery.

Earl R. Sponenberg, 78, of Muncy RD 2, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 1972, in the Muncy Valley Hospital. He had been ill for six months.

He was born at Nanticoke on March 27, 1894, a son of George and Anna Naugle Sponenberg. A resident of Muncy RD 2 for 42 years, Mr. Sponenberg was a farmer and was employed on a highway maintenance crew. He is survived by a brother, Miles W., of Muncy RD 2.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Welsh's, 108 North Main Street, Muncy, with the Rev. Clay M. Reed, a retired United Methodist minister, officiating. Burial will be in Picture Rocks Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

BIESECKER, Jr. her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. Mrs. ROBINHOLT died at 6:22 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4, 1994, at the Berwick Hospital Center, where she had been a patient for five days. She had been a resident of the Berwick Retirement Village Nursing Home for one and a half years. Born Oct 12, 1895, in Briar Creek Township, she was the daughter of the late James and Sarah BOSTON SPONENBERG. Her husband, Clyde W. ROBINHOLT, died June 5, 1978. Mrs. ROBINHOLT was the oldest member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Berwick. She was a member of the Augsburg Sunday School Class and the Circle Esther of the church. She attended schools in Briar Creek Twonship, and had spent her entire life in the Berwick area.

Surviving are four children: Gertrude M. NEAGLEY, Berwick; James B. ROBINHOLT, Almedia; Mrs. C. L. (Charlotte) KANOUSE, Cambridge, Mass., and Bill D. ROBINHOLT, Berwick; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family. Proceeding her in death were three sisters: Minnie F. GEBHART, on April 22, 1941, Gertrude WHITMIRE on Dec. 13, 1946, and Daisy MYERS.

Elmer L. Sponenberg, 66, of Kachinka Hollow Road, Berwick,beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother,son and uncle, died at his home early Wednesday morning, June 4, 2008, following a brief illness. He was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Berwick, a son of Mary Slusser Sponenberg, a resident of Elmcroft,in Berwick, and the late William Lee Sponenberg.

As a young man, Elmer worked 20 years for Weis Markets as a stock clerk. He then went to work as a guard for the Graterford Prison in Hatfield, and more recently at the SCI Retreat, for 14 years, retiring in 2003, due to his health. He was Pappy Gummiebear to all of us. He loved to play with his grandchildren and his greatest joy was going to yard sales and flea markets filling his garage with treasures. He will never be forgotten. Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his wife, the former Ve Martin, originally of Lock Haven, and they would have observed their 33rd wedding anniversary on June 21,2008. He also is survived by two sons: James J. Milot and his wife, Doreen, of Brockton; Eric Sponenberg of Slocum; four daughters: Trudy Drasher and her husband, Charles, Dee Dee Whitenight and her husband, Robert, all of Berwick;Diane Pawlowski and her husband, Stanley, of Dorrance;Ronnie Hayman and her husband, Kevin, of Catawissa; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers: Dale A. Sponenberg and his wife, Patricia, and Richard E. Sponenberg and his wife, Judy, all of Berwick.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 7, 2008, at 11 a.m. from the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick, with the Rev. Elaine L. Boyer, hospice chaplain for Hospice By the Sea, Boca Raton , Fla., officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Front Street, Berwick. Friends will be received Friday, June 6, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
